Curriculum

Within Foundation Two, we use our three enquiry questions to teach our curriculum throughout the year. These are underpinned by the seven areas of learning in the EYFS. The three enquiries all have an overarching question which the children work towards answering.

Autumn Term - "What makes me, me?" & "What makes somebody special?"

For our first enquiry, this is split into two overarching questions. This learning is delivered through the history curriculum. The children will identify their birthdate, why we celebrate this and how. We will be holding our own birthday party in the home corner area as an invitation to play. We will be sharing knowledge about our families and who our family members are. Building on from this, in Autumn 2 we will be thinking about the wider community and what makes someone special. We will be learning the key terms "past" and "present" when discussing events such as Bonfire Night and Remembrance Day. We will also be looking at toys and discussing the changes to these from the past to the present. Finally, we will be watching a clip of Rebecca Adlington winning her gold medal at the Olympics. We will be discussing why she is significant and what an inspiration she is.

Key Texts:

These texts have been chosen as they are high-quality and engage the children in their current learning relating to the enquiry.

These books are an excellent resource to further investigate at home and offer a great connection to the material covered.

Spring Term - "What makes an area different?"

For our second enquiry, the learning is delivered through their Understanding of the World, focusing on geographical knowledge. In Spring 1 we will be looking at features of our local environment and the village 'Bilsthorpe'. We will be going on a walk around Bilsthorpe to identify these to enhance our enquiry learning. The children will know the purpose of a map and will be able to draw simple information from this. The children will be able to identify the country they live in and be able to identify this on a world map. In Spring 2, we will be looking at the country, Kenya, and comparing this to the country England, thinking carefully about the similarities and differences. We will also be discussing the different seasons and life cycle of a bee.
