Curriculum
Within Foundation One, we use our three enquiry questions to teach our curriculum throughout the year. These are underpinned by the seven areas of learning in the EYFS. The three enquiries all have an overarching question which the children work towards answering.
Autumn Term - "What makes me special?" & "How do we celebrate?"
For our first enquiry, this is split into two overarching questions. This learning is delivered through the history curriculum. In Autumn 1, children learn all about who is in their immediate family, how their family takes care of them, identify people who are familiar to them, e.g. teacher, shop assistant, firefighters, police officers, and the roles of those familiar people and how they can help us. In Autumn 2, the children learn all about significant events and celebrations. They learn about birthdays, Bonfire night, Remembrance day, Diwali, and Christmas.
Key Texts:
These texts have been chosen as they are high-quality and engage the children in their current learning relating to the enquiry.
These books are an excellent resource to further investigate at home and offer a great connection to the material covered.
Spring Term - "What makes Bilsthorpe special?"
For our second enquiry, the learning is delivered through their Understanding of the World, focusing on geographical knowledge. In Spring 1, the children learn all about Bilsthorpe. They learn that Bilsthorpe is a village, and they identify key features within Bilsthorpe, e.g. school, park, pond, and trail. Building on this, the children begin to think about how we can care for our environment and what it means to recycle. In Spring 2, we begin to think about places beyond Bilsthorpe. We learn that Bilsthorpe is a village within a country called England. We then compare England to another country - Kenya! We explore and identify the differences and similarities between England and Kenya in relation to animals, food and weather.
